Discover over 400 years of living history at Braemar Castle, Scotland’s first community-run castle.
Built in 1628 by the Earl of Mar as a Highland hunting lodge, the castle has lived many lives, from its destruction during the first Jacobite uprising to its later role as a redcoat garrison, and eventually a welcoming family home for Clan Farquharson. The castle has been cared for by the local community since 2007, when dedicated volunteers came together to secure its future.
Today, they continue to share its rich and colourful past with visitors from around the world, while looking ahead through the “Raising the Standard” project, an ambitious vision for the castle and its grounds. A visit offers an immersive journey through history.
Visitors can explore the castle at their own pace or join a guided tour, highly recommended, for a deeper experience.
Led by knowledgeable volunteer guides, these tours bring the castle’s dramatic past to life through engaging storytelling, fascinating anecdotes, and the chance to ask questions as you move through its atmospheric rooms. Self-guided visitors will find interactive exhibitions, authentic interiors, and displays that reveal the story of Clan Farquharson and the generations who shaped the castle.
Fans of film and television may also recognise the castle from its appearance in Outlander. Outside, enjoy a walk through the grounds and follow the Timeline Trail to the castle entrance, highlighting key moments in its history.
Discover the restored 1930s kitchen garden, planted with heritage fruit and vegetables, or explore winding paths leading to the Fog House, a 19th-century folly with views towards Invercauld Estate. The gift shop offers a selection of locally inspired gifts, books, and souvenirs.
Whether joining a guided tour or exploring at leisure, visitors can expect a warm welcome and a memorable experience shaped by the passionate community who care for this remarkable place..
