Forest Cottage sits amongst pine, birch and bracken on Loch an Eilein's wooded north-east shore, in the heart of Rothiemurchus - one of Scotland's most picturesque Highland estates. This pretty little red-roofed, wooden-porched cottage was beautifully restored as a cosy forest hideaway in 2018, with a homely interior straight out of a Scottish folk tale.
Sounds of birdsong, the wild beauty of the forest around you and its earthy evergreen scents - these surroundings are a balm for all the senses that will restore peace, balance and tranquillity the moment you arrive.
At Forest Cottage you can enjoy a slower pace of life and the simplest of pleasures - the crackle and hiss of logs on the wood burner, the familiar and comforting scent of wood smoke. The double height living room is achingly charming - from its little window seat to its original stone hearth and wood burning stove. The kitchen is fitted with all the luxury appliances you could wish for - from a big range oven to a wine fridge. The interiors reflect both the infinite variety of woods and greens of the forest, and the vintage fabrics and simple furnishings that would have been found in this cottage over the centuries.
The bedroom is fairy-tale romantic with its super-king bed and red and white cabin-luxe decor. It leads through to a luxury contemporary bathroom which incorporates little touches of decadence amongst the simplicity of the woodland surroundings. You have a rain shower, whirlpool bath and even a cleverly hidden flat screen TV at one end of the bathtub. A pretty twin bedroom upstairs can also be made up for you on request if you are bringing children.
From the front door you'll see glimpses of the pine-clad mountains beyond the loch. You can make your way down the heather fringed path to where the forest opens out and the loch laps against the shore. The water reflects the ever-changing Highland skies, and the trees frame a truly incredible view in any weather. The lonely loch island with its ghostly ruined castle seems to float before you, and the forested slopes of the mountains fade into the distance beyond.
But for all its feeling of remote woodland seclusion, you can reach the centre of Aviemore on foot (30 minutes) or by bike (15 minutes) via quiet forest tracks, past herds of deer and breath-taking views across forested valleys. In fact Rothiemurchus sits in the perfect Highlands location - ideally sited between the town of Aviemore and the wild beauty of the Cairngorms National Park.
