This latest 2-person lodge is much in the style of the the Cairngorms National Park Design Award winning 'Woodman's Hut', opened in 2011.
Perched, this time, at the edge of waterfowl ponds with native goldeneye alongside mandarin, widgeon, whistler ducks and the lazy Aylesburies, the cosy two-person 'Duck's Nest', shares happily the six secluded acres of woodland, sheep paddocks and garden grounds together with the owners' home and cottage. Nearby are the tiny, quirky 'Lazy Duck' bunkhouse hostel and the 4-pitch lightweight, summer only camping ground, all sheltered by ancient Caledonian pine trees. Red squirrels, deer, crested tits are your nearest neighbours along with the waterfowl.
Built from local larch wood and Douglas Fir the 'Duck's Nest' is this time roofed in ancient, weathered Tomintoul stone and with woodwashed pine linings has perhaps a touch more elegance.
Rain water is gravity fed from the roof into two whisky barrels and then to the 100 year old brass tap at the sink. The king size Hebridean box bed with stargazer window above, wood burning stove and veranda are complemented by candle lanterns supported by some electric lighting, a gas cooking stove and oven, tiny fridge and a sumptuous soft leather sofa from which you can keep an eye on the ducks. The dining table is graced by two comfortable Edwardian carver dining chairs tempting you to linger over your meal overlooking the water.
The veranda has its own breakfast table and two all weather rattan chairs. A chimenea wood burner for a log fire or BBQ stands nearby on the deck. Here in a small space is old-style charm, in keeping with some modern quirky style and dollops of profound tranquility.
Fresh eggs are often available from free-ranging hens in the field, and bread can be baked for your breakfast table.
Organic vegetables and summer salads are grown in the gardens and poly-tunnel for the benefit of the household and visitors alike, and these together with locally produced jams and chutneys are made available in support of our local mountain rescue team.
And at the end of the day visitors can, at a modest cost, have use of a 2-person infra-red sauna with or without music, therapeutic and deeply relaxing. Similarly the wood fired hot tub is also available when we light it.
Both The Duck's Nest and The Woodman's Hut, sited well apart from one another in quite different locations, have been designed by David and Valery Dean and beautifully crafted by Rob Clarke and David Robson from the nearby Braes of Castle Grant. Timber has been brought from Altyre and Cromartie sawmills from which all windows and internal fittings have been hand made. The flooring is in oak. Other fitments and decoration are from artist/craftspersons affiliated to Creative Cairngorms. All paints used are eco registered. Tomintoul stone is, of course, from Tomintoul.
Wood fired hot tub frequently available. Infra red sauna - please enquire about rates for either and book by 10.00am on the day. Try perhaps a Swedish massage in the secluded Well Being Studio. Ple
An exceptional waterside and wildlife location with remote forest and moorland walking from the door. It will take you 5 minutes via the Woodman's Path to reach the Poet's Seat looking direct to Cairngorm, the Northern Corries and Bynack Mor and another ten minutes to find yourself immersed in the rare and intriguing juniper 'forest' of neighbouring Lettoch Farm.
Legendary hot water open sky bush shower and sweet airy composting toilet.
