A tranquil homestead in the fringes of Abernethy Forest, - the sort of place you thought didn't exist any more.
Visitors to the Cairngorms have been coming to us here for over thirty years and to the hostel and four tent camping ground for nearly ten.
A flotilla of large white ducks and an artist's palette of waterfowl are your welcome, - David and Valery too. The eight bed larch, pine and oak clad hostel sits quietly beside a forest burn and pond in these three acres. Red squirrels scuttle to and from the feeding station in the covered garden.
Inside the hostel, more like a mountain hut but colourful and snug, a double bed and two singles on the gallery upstairs and cabin bunks for four downstairs provide individually lit and partitioned bed spaces. The wood stove will warm you in the coldest of winters and the covered garden with its antler chandelier and ship's lantern provides space for your evening BBQ. You can gather or cut your own wood for the barbie fire, collect your supplied dry wood for the indoor stove and generally enjoy the elemental living style that is The Lazy Duck.
Through the gate to a one-hundred acre grazing moor looking to the Cairngorm range, a gentle footpath takes you through juniper, pine, silver birch and rowan leading to spectacular views from Bynack Mor westwards to the Monadliath Mountains and of course there are ample woodland cycle trails and swift routes into the high and lonely places. There are also forest walks and slower routes, food for the soul.
Location
Follow road signs to Nethy Bridge and find the Nethy Bridge Hotel in the centre of the village near the river. There is a sign in the pub garden there directing you just one mile to the hostel. Cross one road at 'Causar crossroads' (our nearest bus stop) and look for our Lazy Duck sign on the roadside.

With just 6/8 beds The Lazy Duck is one of the smallest independent hostels in Europe. It is is fresh, colourful, snug and a regular haunt of return visitors, families, small groups and individuals. A special treat is the 2-person sauna with music at the end of the day!

Sheltered covered garden with basket chair seating and dining table, BBQ/wood fire, 2 person sauna, safe, dry storage for bikes, skis and outdoor gear. Free range eggs, home baked bread. Oh! and L. Duck's guitar for reasonably skilled players only.

A charming traditional 4 star graded forest cottage, separately available, is situated also within the 6 acre homestead.
Our 'Woodman's Hut', a romantic stand alone retreat for two, complete with box bed, star gazer and south facing verandah looking straight to Cairngorm welcomed its first guests in the autumn of 2011.
Separately available too is the 4 pitch lightweight camping ground for tents up to 3 man in size. Campers' Shelter, hot and cold water, flush loo, chimenea fire and enviable bush shower all provided.
