‘Stoke your boilers – oil your moustaches – bust out your bustles and brush down your breeches – a Golden Age is upon us.  The Insider is back – and it’s Victorian’

 Unique and boutique, The Insider Festival returns for it’s 3rd year.  With a capacity of just 750 sharing 30 acres of camping on the banks of the Spey on the Edwardian country Estate of Inshriach House. The Insider once again hosts the most exciting new music from across the empire with Lau (BBC Radio 2 Folk band of the year for the last 2 years) not only performing but curating the main stage on Sunday,  joining them are a host of musical friends including Glasgow’s Hidden Orchestra, Admiral Fallow and the fantastic Horndog Brass Band.

Even though well over 75 bands are performing over the weekend there is lots more to see and do at The Insider including theatrics and parlour games by Manchester’s Larkin’ About, Visuals by the infamous Forkbeard Fantasy, vintage clothing stalls, Bushcraft and much more Victorian themed stalls and revelry to explore.

The finest in locally sourced food includes spit roasts from Ordban, venison, wood fired pizza, The Old Bridge Inn Smokehouse and much more. There are bars to suit the most discerning palate, whether your tipple is local beer from The Cairngorm Brewery or the now legendry Thistley Cross Cider or perhaps Madam would be interested Afternoon tea, cakes and cocktails…

The Insider has carved a unique reputation by being a festival built around and shaped by its musicians.  It has seeded wild collaborations, the formation of new bands and has been the setting and inspiration for the recording of albums and music videos.

Cairngorms Launches World’s First National Park iPhone App

The world’s first National Park I-phone App has been launched today, Monday 18th October, in the Cairngorms National Park by one of the country’s leading tourism and business organisations.

The VisitCairngorms App is the first app in the world to give visitors to a National Park the opportunity to obtain free, up-to-date information on where to stay, what to do and where to eat and drink based on their location within the Park.

In addition, the app will also allow visitors to access information on events taking place in the UK’s largest National Park.

Alan Rankin, Chief Executive of the Cairngorms Business Partnership, the organisation that has developed and launched the Cairngorms App, said: “It is incredibly exciting to be the first National Park in the world to launch a free information app specifically designed for visitors to the area and we are delighted to be leading the way. There are other National Park apps out there, but many are simply games, maps or overview apps – we have done our research and there are none out there that work in the way our app is designed – to get the customer in touch with local businesses and which are completely free to the user.“

The Cairngorms App gives the user the opportunity to search for restaurants, cafes activity providers and attractions closest to them wherever they are in the Cairngorms National Park. It will also tell the user how far away they are from any one business as well as giving them information on the company, Visit Scotland star ratings, contact information to make a booking and a link to the inbuilt Maps App giving them directions to where they are aiming to go. The area has a very effective website www.visitcairngorms.com and social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter but the launch of the new app represents a first real step towards being able to communicate directly with visitors when they are moving around the area.

The I phone app is fed by a database of over 1200 listings and choices for the visitor and, like the website www.visitcairngorms.com, gets the customer to the business fast.

Rankin added. “Both the website and I-phone app are industry leaders in letting the user book a table, rooms or an activity within three clicks or taps. Customers now demand that information is immediately to hand. To date we have been able to provide great detail on the area via our website for what is mostly information gathering pre-departure, but now we have taken a massive leap forward in being able to provide customers live up to date information direct to their i-phones as they travel or visit the area.”

The app will identify the users location and then provide through Google Maps directions and a live map tracking their progress to the selected business. The app also provides directions by car, train or on foot to the chosen business.

The sometimes intermittent mobile signal within the Cairngorms National Park is also not a problem for the Cairngorms App as, explains Alan Rankin: “The app will automatically update when the user is within a mobile signal range in order to ensure that no-one misses out on the special offers and users can also gain the most relevant information to them at any one time.”

The Cairngorms Business Partnership decided to launch the App for the I-phone only to begin with following a study of the area that confirmed there was 5 times as many i-phone based enquiries to their website than all the other providers put together and nearly 15 times as many to that of second placed Blackberry users.

The project is supported by the Cairngorms National Park Authority and the Northern Periphery Programme funded Clim- ATIC Project.

Join a guide to take you up on the funicular to the Ptarmigan building then out on a guided 90-minute walk to the summit of Cairn Gorm and back, before descending by the funicular. Adults £13, Students/seniors £12, Children (6-16) £10. (Includes funicular travel.) Friends of CairnGorm £5. Visitors may only exit the Ptarmigan building when on one of these walks.

Wednesday 6th October – The UK’s Highest Porridge Breakfast: 10.30am – 12 noon
At the Ptarmigan Restaurant, enjoy a hearty bowl of porridge at the UK’s highest restaurant for a donation to Mary’s Meals, a Scottish charity feeding 4m. needy children across the world.

Base Station Refurbishment – for the next week.
The Base Station is closed at present. The Ticket Office has relocated to the Ranger Base. Entry to the funicular through the lower doors (leading to the toilets) and up the back stairs.

The Big Freeze Exhibition
Photographs from last winter is on display in part of the T Bar and on the stairs up to it as well as in various other locations. Many of the pictures are for sale.

Walk Up, Train Down
Visitors can enjoy 90 minutes of rewarding walking up one of our self-guided paths, enter the Ptarmigan top station, before continuing their walk or purchasing a down only train ticket. (Dogs may come down on the train for a small charge). Appropriate clothing/footwear advised.

Camera Obscura
This free attraction is located in the Mountain Garden near the Base Station and enables visitors to see 360-degree real-time views of the surrounding landscape.

The Igloo
Get the kids to have a go at building the new all-year igloo in the Base Station.

Shopping
Look out for great clothing, walking essentials, fabulous gifts and accessories in our shops. Don’t forget our Ptarmigan 16-year-old malt whisky in full 75cl bottles and miniatures.

Eating and drinking
Home-baking every day in our restaurant and cafe bar and hot meals featuring locally sourced ingredients in the mountain-top restaurant.

Wildlife this week
Family groups of Ptarmigan are spreading out. Snow Bunting can be seen on the summits and Red Grouse can be seen on the lower moors up to 800m. Meadow Pipit are in flocks of 30-40+ and Black Grouse can be seen regularly during early morning on the link road.

Friday 1st October: Wind S 50mph with gusts up to 90mph easing, easing late in the day. Widespread rain and cloud, little sun. Temp at 900m 7C.
Saturday 2nd October: Wind S 25mph with gusts up to 50mph. A few brief heavy showers but sunshine at times. Temp at 900m 6C.
Outlook: Very unsettled conditions with frequent periods of strong to gale force winds, rain and cloud often covering higher areas. Fairly mild temperatures.

OPENING TIMES

UK’s Highest Porridge Breakfast

Visitors to Cairngorm Mountain are being invited to take part in the UK’s Highest Porridge Breakfast in aid of the Scottish based charity, Mary’s Meals. The fund raiser is being held on the morning of Wednesday October 6 at the Ptarmigan Restaurant at the top of the CairnGorm Mountain’s funicular railway – the highest restaurant in the UK.

The porridge breakfast is among a series of events being held across the UK and in India, African, Norway, Sweden, Canada and USA in the countdown to World Porridge Day – an international celebration of Scotland’s traditional national dish with porridge ambassadors around the world invited to host their own porridge/ oatmeal events to raise money for Mary’s Meals. The charity, which started from a tin shed in Argyllshire, daily feeds more than 400,000 of the poorest and neediest children in 15 countries.

World Porridge Day has been established by the village of Carrbridge – home of the annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship which this year takes place on Sunday October 10. With expert porridge makers from far and wide set to gather in the village to battle it out for the prestigious Golden Spurtle trophy, organisers hope that as many people as possible will support the fund raising events for Mary’s Meals.

“The charity does tremendous work and we hope that everyone will join in the spirit of the World Porridge Day fund raising to help support this worthwhile cause,” said Carrbridge Community Council chairman, Scott Bruce.

At CairnGorm Mountain, funicular ticket holders wanting to take part in the UK’s Highest Porridge Breakfast will be invited to tuck into a hearty bowl of porridge with a variety of fillings in the Ptarmigan Restaurant in return for a donation to Mary’s Meals. The porridge breakfast will be served from 10.30am to 12 noon.

Walk Up, Train Down
For an exhilarating half day, visitors can enjoy 90 minutes of rewarding walking up one of our self-guided paths, enter the Ptarmigan top station via the walkers’ entrance and visit the restaurant, before continuing their walk or purchasing a down only train ticket. (Dogs may come down on the train for a small charge). Appropriate clothing and footwear advised.

Camera Obscura
This attraction is located in the Mountain Garden near the Base Station and enables visitors to see 360-degree real-time views of the surrounding landscape projected onto a table in front of them. Entry is free and it is open every day.

The Igloo
Get the kids to have a go at building the new all-year igloo in the Base Station.

Shopping
Look out for great clothing ranges, walking essentials, fabulous gifts and accessories and our latest exclusive CairnGorm buff in the Mountain Shop and the Shop at the Top. Don’t forget our Ptarmigan 16-year-old malt whisky available in full 75cl bottles and 5cl miniatures.

Eating and Drinking
Home-baking every day in our restaurant and cafe bar and hot meals featuring locally sourced ingredients in the restaurant. ‘The Chocolate Mountain’, a huge concoction of hot chocolate, marshmallows and cream beckons in both locations.

Wildlife this week
Family groups of Ptarmigan are still around. Snow Bunting can be seen above 900m and Red Grouse can be seen on the lower moors. Meadow Pipit can be seen in flocks of 30-40+. The garden is becoming very autumnal in colour.

Saturday 18th September: Wind NW 15mph easing to 10mph. Risk of rain falling as snow on the summit. A little sunshine in the morning. Temp at 900m 3C rising to 5C.
Outlook: Winds will ease away and it will become milder. Cloudy and drier easterly winds coming by Tuesday.

World Record Attempt Cairngorm in Kilts

World Record  Attempt

“CairnGorm in Kilts”

CairnGorm Mountain is attempting to set a world record for the largest number of kilted skiers/snowboarders skiing down a piste at once. The attempt will take place on Saturday 6th March at 11am and all money raised will be split between Maggie’s Highland and the Badenoch & Strathspey Schools Skiing Programme.

We are aiming to have 600 kilted skiers and snowboarders ski in a single consecutive line from the Ptarmigan Top Station at CairnGorm Mountain all the way down to car park level.

Ian Whitaker, Chief Executive at CAirnGorm Mountain said:

“Snow conditions this winter are so fantastic at CairnGorm Mountain that staff wanted to celebrate the skiing from top to bottom in a memorable way that would also involve the public. So far this year we have held two torch light descents but the “CairnGorm in Kilts” world record attempt would be unique to Scotland and Scottish Skiing. We hope that our customers will embrace the fun and also know that they are raising money for two great local causes.”

Participants should be competent intermediate / advanced skiers or snowboarders capable of skiing slowly and steadily from the top station down the Traverse, Coire Cas, Zig Zags and the lower slopes without stopping. (World record attempts require the line to be consecutive and a moving single line.)
